What to Bring for IPPT

The complete Singapore checklist for pre-enlistees, NSFs and NSmen. Updated 2026.

For NSmen, NSFs and Pre-Enlistees NRIC is mandatory — no exceptions Updated 2026 SAF standards

Going for your IPPT soon? Do not show up empty-handed or in the wrong gear. You could get turned away at the gate. It happens more often than you think.

This guide covers exactly what to bring for IPPT. Whether you are a pre-enlistee, a full-time NSF, or an NSman going for your annual test, this list applies to you.

Check your score before test day Use the free IPPT Calculator to see where you stand. Know your push-up, sit-up and run targets before you step into the FCC.

Pre-enlistee IPPT and NS Duration

Before we get into the checklist, you need to understand how the pre-enlistee IPPT works. Your result affects how long you serve.

What is PES?

PES stands for Physical Employment Standard. It is a grading system that shows your medical fitness level. Your PES grade helps determine your NS vocation and the type of basic training you go through.

It is not a general health grade. You can be healthy and still get a lower PES due to a specific medical condition. Visit CMPB for the full PES breakdown.

What is pre-enlistee IPPT?

Pre-enlistee IPPT is a physical fitness test for males graded PES A or B1. It has three stations: push-ups, sit-ups and a 2.4km run. All done before you enlist.

Your score is based on your age and how many reps you hit in one minute for each station, plus your run timing. Use the IPPT Calculator to estimate your score right now.

How will my PES and pre-enlistee IPPT affect my basic training?

Your PES grade and IPPT score together decide what kind of basic training you go through.

PES A or B1

Score 61 points or more, with at least 1 point from each station. Do that and you skip the 8-week Physical Training Phase (PTP). You enlist later into the next basic training intake instead. You need to hit this score at least 14 days before the PTP enlistment date.

If you score below 61, you enlist as scheduled and go through PTP to build up your fitness first.

PES B2, B3, B4, BP, C, or E

You are not eligible for pre-enlistee IPPT. You will go through a different basic training programme suited to your PES grade.

Location to take pre-enlistee IPPT

If you are in a JC, Polytechnic, Millennia Institute, or ITE, your school usually runs the IPPT in-house. Check with your PE department.

If you are not in these schools, or you want a re-test, book a slot at a Fitness Conditioning Centre (FCC). Current available locations are Maju FCC and CMPB FCC. Slots are on Wednesdays, excluding public holidays. Book through ns.gov.sg using your Singpass.

What to bring and wear for your pre-enlistee IPPT

Here is the official list from CMPB and LifeSG. Do not show up without these.

What to Bring

  • NRIC (mandatory)
  • Water bottle
  • Face towel
  • Booking confirmation on phone

What to Wear

  • Singlet, t-shirt or polo t-shirt
  • Knee-length or running shorts
  • Tights above the knee only
  • Running shoes with laces tied

Not Allowed

  • Long sleeves
  • Tights below the knee
  • Track pants
  • Working shoes or slippers
SAF Dress Regulations apply at all FCCs If you are in the wrong attire, you get turned away. No exceptions. No second chances on the same day. Check your kit the night before.

Final date to take pre-enlistee IPPT

The last date to take your pre-enlistee IPPT is the Wednesday that falls at least 14 calendar days before your enlistment date. Your result stays valid for one year after you take the test.

You can attempt it as many times as you want before the deadline. Use the IPPT Calculator to track your progress and know when you are ready to book.

Enlistment Day Essentials

Enlistment day is different from your IPPT day. Many guys confuse the two. Here is what you need specifically for enlistment day.

What happens on enlistment day

Enlistment day is your first day of National Service. You report to your training facility, take your oath of allegiance, and begin your NS journey. It is a formal occasion. Dress and behave accordingly.

First day experience

You will go through admin processes, medical checks and orientation. Everything moves fast. Arrive on time. Be prepared. Do not bring things that are not on the list below.

What you should wear and bring

For enlistment day, you are taking an oath. The dress code is formal. Singlets, shorts, bermudas, sandals and slippers are not allowed. This applies to your parents and friends who come with you too.

Wear:

  • Collared shirt
  • Long trousers
  • Shoes (not slippers or sandals)

Bring:

  • NRIC
  • All immunisation certificates and medical documents including your health booklet
  • Printout of your PES and medical excuses from eHealth at safhealth.gov.sg
  • Spectacles with dark-coloured plastic frames if needed. Contact lenses are not allowed during training.
  • A watch with a dark plastic or fabric strap
  • Basic toiletries such as body foam, soap, shampoo, shaver and nail clippers
  • Swimming goggles
  • A set of civilian clothing and hangers
  • Extra underwear
  • An alarm clock
  • A small padlock for your locker

If posted to SPF or SCDF, also bring:

  • Bank account book or bank statement
  • Original and photocopy of your highest educational certificate
Do not bring these on enlistment day Cameras or video cameras. Mobile phone chargers or USB cables. Valuables like expensive watches, jewellery or excess cash. Any military or police equipment bought outside camp.

If you fall sick on enlistment day

See a doctor immediately. Then call the NS Contact Centre at 1800-367-6767. Email your Medical Certificate to MINDEF at contact@ns.gov.sg before 12pm on the same day. You may need to report to the Medical Classification Centre for a review.

Do not skip it without informing them. That creates bigger problems.

IPPT Test Essentials

This section covers what you need to know about the actual IPPT test day at the FCC. Applies to NSmen, NSFs and pre-enlistees.

What are the 3 stations for the IPPT Test?

The IPPT has three stations only. Chin-ups were removed in 2015.

StationDurationMax PointsMinimum to avoid fail
Push-ups1 minute continuous25 pointsAt least 1 point
Sit-ups1 minute continuous25 pointsAt least 1 point
2.4km RunTimed run50 pointsAt least 1 point
Total100 pointsMinimum 51 to pass
Zero in any station is an automatic fail It does not matter what your total is. Score zero on push-ups, sit-ups or the run and you fail the whole test. Check the full IPPT Score Table for Regular Servicemen to understand exact points per station.

What must I wear for the Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT)?

SAF Dress Regulations apply at all FCCs. Wear the wrong thing and you will not be allowed in.

Acceptable Attire

  • Singlet
  • T-shirt or polo t-shirt
  • Tights above the knee
  • Knee-length or running shorts
  • Running shoes with laces tied

Not Acceptable

  • Long sleeves
  • Tights below the knee
  • Track pants or sweatpants
  • Working shoes
  • Sandals or slippers
Wear light and breathable material Singapore heat and humidity will affect you during the 2.4km run. Avoid anything tight that limits your movement for push-ups or sit-ups. Simple is best.

What are the safety precautions on the day of my IPPT session?

Do not attempt the test if you are sick or injured. The FCC will not force you, but attempting while unwell risks your health and your score.

Warm up before each station. Stretch your shoulders, chest and hip flexors. Do a light jog before the 2.4km run.

Do not eat a heavy meal within 2 hours of the test. A light meal 2 to 3 hours before is fine. Stay hydrated but avoid drinking too much right before the run. If you feel unwell during the test, inform the tester immediately.

What time must I report for the Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT)?

Report at the time stated in your booking confirmation. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. Late arrivals may lose their slot. FCCs run in scheduled batches. Check your booking on the NS portal the night before.

Must I notify my unit when I take my Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT)?

For most NSmen booking through the NS portal, you do not need to notify your unit. But some units have standing orders that require it. Check with your unit admin to be safe.

NSFs taking IPPT during full-time service follow their unit schedule. Check with your sergeant or officer.

Preparing for NS and IPPT

When does the IPPT window start and end?

The IPPT window runs from 1 April to 31 March the following year. That is one full financial year. NSmen get a specific window based on their ORD date.

Do not wait until March to start training. Start early. Read how to improve your 2.4km run time and check the push-up and sit-up training guide to get ahead.

Am I eligible to participate in the IPPT?

If you are a Singapore citizen or PR male who has completed or is currently serving NS, you are likely required to take the annual IPPT. Pre-enlistees graded PES A or B1 are eligible for the pre-enlistee IPPT.

If you are PES B2, B3, B4, BP, C or E, you are not eligible for the standard IPPT. Your training pathway is different. Check with CMPB or your unit admin if unsure.

When should I undergo the pre-IPPT medical screening?

You do not need a separate medical screening before every IPPT attempt. Your PES grading from CMPB already determines your eligibility. If you have a medical condition that may affect your ability to test, inform the FCC staff on arrival.

If you recently recovered from an injury or illness, check with a doctor before attempting.

How are points allocated for each station?

Points are age-calibrated. A 22-year-old and a 35-year-old doing the same reps will not get the same score. Push-ups give up to 25 points. Sit-ups give up to 25 points. The 2.4km run gives up to 50 points. Total is 100 points. Minimum to pass is 51 with at least 1 point per station.

Find your exact score instantly Use the IPPT Calculator. Enter your age group, push-up reps, sit-up reps and 2.4km run timing. Your score and award tier come up in seconds.

How many times can I re-take my IPPT?

Pre-enlistees can attempt as many times as they want before the deadline. NSmen can retake within their IPPT window. If you fail, you enter NS FIT and must complete 10 mandatory sessions before you can reattempt in the next window.

How do I book my IPPT, and when are the slots available?

Book through ns.gov.sg. Log in with your Singpass. Select your preferred FCC, date and time slot. Slots can fill up fast near the end of the window. Book early. Do not wait for the last minute.

Where are the available locations for me to take my IPPT?

Maju FCC and CMPB FCC are the current available locations. Check ns.gov.sg for the latest availability. During ICT, NSmen may also take IPPT within their unit’s testing schedule.

Appropriate attire for IPPT

Singlet or t-shirt. Shorts at or above the knee. Running shoes. That is it. Nothing more, nothing less. Do not wear tights below the knee. Do not wear track pants. Do not wear slippers. People still get turned away for this every week.

What is NS Fitness Improvement Training (NS FIT)?

NS FIT is a mandatory fitness programme for NSmen who fail their IPPT or do not attempt it within their window. It has 10 supervised sessions at an FCC or SAF training facility. You must complete all 10 before you can take the IPPT again.

Use the NS FIT Session Tracker to log your sessions and know exactly when you are eligible to reattempt.

FAQs (High-Value and Highly Searched)

What happens if I do not pass or attempt my IPPT by the end of my window?+
You are required to complete NS FIT. That is 10 mandatory sessions. Once done, you can retake IPPT in the next window. Missing NS FIT obligations can lead to further action from your unit or MINDEF. Do not let your window lapse without attempting. Even a failed attempt keeps you in the system properly.
I travel frequently for overseas assignments. Am I still required to take my annual IPPT?+
Yes. Being overseas for work does not automatically excuse you. You are expected to plan around your travel and book a slot when you are back in Singapore. If your overseas assignment is prolonged, contact your unit admin to apply for a formal deferment. Do not assume you are automatically excused.
If I am overseas for study or work, do I need to take IPPT?+
Same answer. Overseas study or work does not automatically exempt you. Apply through the proper NS portal channels for a deferment or exemption. Check ns.gov.sg or speak to your unit for the correct process. Deferments are not automatic. Apply early.
Must I notify my unit when I book and attempt my IPPT?+
For most NSmen booking through the NS portal, you do not need to notify your unit. However, your unit may have standing orders that require it. Check your unit admin requirements to be safe. During ICT, IPPT is usually part of the in-camp schedule so no separate booking is needed.
Failed IPPT during mandatory NS FIT cycle — what happens?+
You start another NS FIT cycle. Another 10 mandatory sessions before you can attempt again. This is why consistent training matters. Check the top 10 exercises to improve your IPPT score to avoid going through repeat cycles.
Can I use IPPT attempts to replace NS FIT sessions?+
No. IPPT and NS FIT are separate requirements. You cannot substitute IPPT attempts for NS FIT sessions. You must complete all 10 NS FIT sessions before you are eligible to retake the IPPT.
Best places for IPPT for NSmen?+
Most NSmen book at Maju FCC or CMPB FCC. Both are accessible by MRT. Bring your booking confirmation on your phone. Some NSmen prefer taking IPPT during ICT as no separate booking is needed. Ask your unit admin about the in-camp schedule.
What do I need to bring for my IPPT?+
  • NRIC or SAF 11B — mandatory, no exceptions
  • Water bottle — filled before you arrive
  • Face towel
  • Proper PT attire — singlet or t-shirt, shorts at or above the knee
  • Running shoes with laces tied
  • Booking confirmation on your phone
  • Smartphone to check your slot if needed
Pack the night before. Without your NRIC, you do not get in.
How much time is enough to train for IPPT — 3 weeks or 2 months?+
3 weeks is very tight. You can make small improvements but you will not see a big jump in that time. 2 months is much more realistic. Train push-ups and sit-ups at least twice a week. Add one interval run and one easy long run per week. Use the IPPT Calculator to track your projected score as you improve. If you only have 3 weeks, focus on your weakest station. Arriving rested is better than arriving injured.
Do I need to bring an IC for my IPPT?+
Yes. Your NRIC or SAF 11B is mandatory for all IPPT sessions at an FCC. No IC means no entry. This applies to pre-enlistees, NSFs and NSmen equally. Keep your IC in your bag the night before. Do not leave it at home.

Security Reminder

Government officials will never ask you to transfer money or disclose bank login details over a phone call

This applies to all government matters including NS and IPPT bookings. If you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from MINDEF, CMPB or any NS-related body asking for money or personal banking details, it is a scam.

Call the 24/7 ScamShield Helpline at 1799 if you are unsure. Report it immediately.

All official NS communications come through ns.gov.sg, cmpb.gov.sg or official SAF portals. Do not share your banking login, OTP or transfer any money over the phone.

Before You Go

Showing up prepared is the first step. Knowing your score target is the second.

What to do now:

  1. Pack your bag the night before. NRIC, water bottle, face towel, proper attire, running shoes.
  2. Check your booking confirmation on your phone.
  3. Use the free IPPT Calculator to know your score target before you walk in.
  4. Read the Complete Guide to Passing IPPT Gold Standard if you are aiming for the top tier.
  5. Check how long IPPT takes so you know what to expect on the day.

Good luck. Train smart. Pass clean.
